Good Choices for a Color Multifunction
We're frequently asked for recommendations by
clients planning on adding to or replacing
printing and imaging hardware. We often
direct those inquiries to a couple popular
and respected review sites, and you'll find
those links on the sidebar of our site.
If you're looking for a color printer/scanner/copier, then you might also be interested in a review that appeared in the October 2009 edition of INC. Bottom Line: Go with the HP Officejet Pro 8500 if you don't plan to print more than 1250 pages-per-month. It costs less to buy ($229-369 depending on options) and much less to operate (4.7 cents-per-page vs. 9-10 cents-per-page) than the offerings from Dell, Brother and Xerox. |

We Have Answers!
Q: We print a lot of payroll and payables
checks and are thinking of printing the
entire check in-house rather than using
pre-printed check stock. We have a source for
the special paper, but are wondering about
what type of printer we will need. Any
recommendations?
A: It depends. What you really need is a specialty toner, referred to as MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) toner. Banks require a line of numbers, printed in MICR toner, at the bottom of checks. These numbers identify the bank the check is drawn on, the account at that bank, the amount of the check and other information. So, you'll print ordinary documents on your office laser printer with a standard toner cartridge, and you'll print checks using a MICR toner cartridge. If you tend to print checks only at certain times of the week/month, then it may be possible to use the same printer for MICR and standard printing. If you decide to use one printer for both tasks, make sure you keep the interior of the printer clean, and that you know which cartridge is the MICR one, and which is the standard one. |
